Think Inside the Box

Have you ever preformed at a level so great that you feel as though you had an out-of-body experience? For example, when Al Geiberger became the first PGA Tour player to shoot 59 in competition he said that he never considered missing putts, as he pictured the hole as the size of a garbage can. In this case, the action was not impeded by thought. If Geiberger had been thinking about shooting a 59 rather than being in the moment of his shots, he never would have scored so low. The key to preforming at such a high level is to completely prepare mentally and believe in that preparation so  much that you can preform with absolute trust.

On the golf course, swing tension can easily sabotage your round. Lack of confidence in your ability to preform the task you are about to take can create swing tension very easily. At the absolute center of a golf game you can trust there must be a routine you can believe in. When we step up to hit a golf shot, we must feel as though we are in a room where there is no doubt or fear but only confidence that we can preform any task at hand.

To create this room, we must create a play box and a think box. To do this, take a string and place it about a yard behind the ball. Behind the string, you are in the Think Box. In front of the string you are in the Play Box. All decisions are made in the Think Box. When you cross the line, or the Decision Line, you should quit thinking and just play golf! As you stand in the Think Box, you should consider all variables for the shot. The only time for indecision is when you are in the Think Box. When you cross the Decision Line, there must be total commitment to the shot. For example, if you are over the ball and are not comfortable with the shot you have decided to take, back off and step back into the Think Box. When you cross into the Play Box, leave doubt behind, aim the club face, and hit your shot. Remember, the longer you wait to take a shot the more opportunity there is for doubt to creep into your mind and body. Its as simple as decide, commit, and swing. Use this tool and you will be on your way to preforming at a level that you never thought possible!
